Chile’s path to a circular economy

The Circular Economy Coalition for Latin America and the Caribbean responds to the great interest and initiatives on circular economy. In the last few years, the LAC region has been very active in the promotion of circular economy.

Chile has undertaken efforts to increase resilience to climate change, mitigate its impacts, and enhance adaptation capacity. Since 2015, Chile has been developing and implementing national and sectoral policies to transition to a low-carbon economy incorporating circular economy principles. A key initiative was the Law on Waste Management, Extended Producer Responsibility and Promotion of Recycling, which aims to reduce waste generation and increase recycling and reuse rates. In 2021, Chile published its ‘Roadmap for a Circular Chile to 2040′ as part of its broader strategy to address climate change and promote sustainable development.

The Factsheet on Chile’s Milestone in the circular economy transition summarises interviews with stakeholders including EU Delegations, the national government, the private sector and civil society. It provides analysis of the vision and motivation of actors in the circular economy transition process, the key challenges met and the milestones set. Lessons learnt and success factors were gathered to enable a better understanding of the “recipes” for replication.
