On 23 November 2023 (15:00-16:30 CEST), the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) and Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals will host a webinar titled “Paving the way for COP 28 ambitions through Circular Economy”. The webinar, which is the first in a planned series to accompany multilateral meetings over the coming 12 months, will explore how the application of the circular economy approach can support the goals of COP28. It will also outline how bringing the circular economy to the forefront of all multilateral negotiations can help ensure that there is an aligned approach to addressing global environmental challenges within planetary boundaries. This webinar will explore how the application of the circular economy approach can support the goals of COP28. It will also outline how bringing the circular economy to the forefront of all multilateral negotiations can help ensure that there is an aligned approach to addressing global environmental challenges within planetary boundaries. Experts from several leading organizations will provide insights on how key circular economy activities, such as resource efficiency, can contribute most effectively to the climate change ambitions that will come out of the upcoming COP28 negotiations.

The Circular Economy constitutes a systemic response to global climate change. The link between climate change and the circular economy has gained more prominence in the recent past. By reducing the need to source and use virgin raw materials, e.g. through material substitution strategies that encourage the supply and use of secondary and/or high performance materials, and by decreasing the amount of energy required across local and global value and supply chains, significant cuts in greenhouse gas emission can be achieved. Next to decarbonisation of industrial processes, circular approaches, such as industrial symbiosis, asset tracking technology and material recovery/take back and refurbishment systems, further reduce resource-intensity and related emissions in production.

The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) and Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) are jointly hosting the webinar “Bringing the Circular Economy to the center of COP28 climate action”.

The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is among other donors co-funded by the EU.
